De retour chez sa mère après une rupture avec sa blonde, Emilia est une étrangère dans sa propre ville, dans sa propre vie. Perdue en Patagonie, lieu mythique où se retrouvent ceux et celles qui se cherchent. Est-ce une parenthèse ou un retour aux sources? Elle cherche des réponses dans les bras d’un type qu’elle a connu adolescente, maintenant marié à sa meilleure amie. Dans les bras de sa mère, aimante et envahie. Et dans les bras d’une élève, au lycée où elle enseigne… Il ne se passe pas grand-chose dans ce film pudique mais l’impression d’être là, tout à côté d’Emilia, presque dans sa tête et dans son cœur, est très forte. Scénario simple, direct et efficace de Cesar Sodero, cadrages très sûrs et assumés, lumière évoquant celle des tableaux d’Edward Hopper, interprétation sensible de Sofia Palomino, qui a un petit air de Charlotte Gainsbourg et de Lou Doillon : Emilia est un remarquable premier long-métrage qui, mine de rien, laisse des traces durables.
Emilia (Sofía Palomino, who has the emotive locks and raw, angular energy of an A Star is Born-era Lady Gaga) has returned to the dusty light of her mother’s home. Here, in this small Patagonian village of stray dogs and economic hardship hemmed in by wind-swept terrain, the villagers gossip about disastrous couplings, only partially realizing they’re talking about themselves. Emilia is reeling from a mysterious break-up of her own with a girlfriend to whom she has left everything, though the film remains firmly rooted in the present, trained on Emilia in lingering shots as she makes a “disaster” out of her already broken life, set to the mesmerizing vocals of Mercedes Nasta. Engaging in flirtations and affairs with local men, Emilia is most drawn to one of her students, the rebellious and gloweringly sensual Rosano (Nina Dziembrowski), pursuing a liaison that is part attraction, part mentorship, and altogether consuming. Spiraling, pulling others into her whirlpool, Emilia’s one hope is that she can learn what one can do with a little courage before the perpetual winds wear her down.
