Sans prétention, ce divertissement certain rend le coming out secondaire, dans ce coming of age aux répliques croustillantes, et ce, sans tomber dans le cliché, malgré une prémisse loufoque, presque dérisoire. Les actrices Sophie Hawkshaw (Ellie) et Zoe Terakes (Abbie) rendent le tout crédible, de par un jeu authentique et un faciès rafraîchissant.
Although Ellie (Sophie Hawkshaw) fuels her 17-year-old ego with motivational quotes, she can’t escape the dynamics of the real world, so when she blithely comes out to her mom (Marta Dusseldorp) by telling her she wants to invite a female crush (Zoe Terakes) to the formal, she’s disappointed when the reaction is mixed and her assumptions about the ease of 21st-century gay life are complicated. Good thing she has a “Fairy Godmother.” Her Aunt Tara (Julia Billington), killed years before under murky circumstances, is a proud lesbian phantom who inserts herself into Ellie’s courtship. The awkwardness of “the follow-up conversation”? Tara’s got it covered. Except, Ellie doesn’t want to listen. She prefers to deal with things her own way, and her aunt’s presence only seems to dredge up difficult family moments. Not to mention how it causes her to bungle her wooing in ever more embarrassing ways. Monica Zanetti’s zany romantic comedy about unfinished business is a tribute to female mentorship with a winking magical realist touch, underscoring the costs of the progress we may take for granted and the quotable-for-a-reason truism about the beauty of being yourself.
