GLI ANNA AMARI (BITTER YEARS) | ANDREA ADRIATICO | ITALIE / ITALY | 2019 | 119 MIN | V.O. ITALIENNE S.-T.A.& F. / ITALIAN S.-T.EN. & F.

The Wildean intellectual and provocateur Mario Mieli (a campy, fearless Nicola Di Benedetto) embodied the ‘live fast, die young’ model of genius. A founding member of the groundbreaking F.U.O.R.I! (Come out!) collective, Mieli helped pioneer gay rights in 1970s Italy and wrote a highly influential political pamphlet, Towards a Gay Communism – all before his untimely death at 31. Andrea Adriatico’s lyrical, gloriously melodramatic biopic Gli anna amari (Bitter Years) translates this vibrant figure to the screen in all his philosophically-minded panache, as he exasperates his family with his free-spiritedness and stirs up society with his queer, feminist worldview. Country-hopping across Europe in a visual feast of stunning locations, lying naked among literature with his radical peers, and dabbling in freemasonry, Mario/Maria searches for “a new Golden Age.” “Pharaoh’s blood” flowing in his veins, he thrives on experimentation and the clashes of gay liberation, finding thorny love with beautiful Umberto (Tobia De Angelis). Though dogged by “educastration” and his own psychological demons, he meets hatred with honey, and becomes unforgettable doing so.
