Avant de partir vivre à Montréal, Lucas vient voir sa sœur qui vit au sud du Chili, dans un petit village côtier. Il y rencontre Antonio, un jeune pêcheur, beau ténébreux avec qui il amorce une liaison tendre et passionnelle. Entre ces deux hommes que tout sépare – l’un né dans ce village où il a toujours vécu et l’autre, étudiant en architecture qui part bientôt – , l’amour pourra-t-il exister? Ces deux-là ne sont pas cowboys, ils ne sont pas mariés et ils ne se voient pas qu’une fois par année mais ils ont quelque chose en commun avec les deux amants de Brokeback Mountain. Une attirance irrépressible, un milieu rude, pas très enclin aux amours entre hommes, et une nature sauvage qui est un vrai personnage de ce film touchant. En 2015, les deux comédiens ont tourné un court-métrage où le cinéaste racontait la même histoire. Peut-être est-ce pour ça qu’on sent entre eux une intimité et une charge sensuelle rares dans les scènes de baise au grand écran.
Lucas (Samuel Gonzalez) and Antonio (Antonio Altamirano) are from starkly different worlds. Lucas is visiting from Santiago – arriving in the small town in southern Chile where his sister, Catalina (Marcela Salinas), resides – before he departs for Montreal, having received a scholarship to a graduate program in architecture. Antonio, who is embedded in the town along with his beloved grandmother, spends his life in the elements, dealing with unpredictable catches on a local fishing vessel and the advances of an embittered, closeted man. Lucas and Antonio are fortresses unto themselves, writer-director Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo shooting them through barriers of glass or training wide shots on the coastal forts that Lucas sketches, him sitting alone in the immensity of the rugged, breathtaking landscape. Yet, when they come together, they begin to break down one another’s defenses, their faces lighting up with every hungry kiss and impassioned tumble. Though, as they will discover, the dynamics of class and prejudice might not be so easily shaken and they will have to each assess for themselves the necessities for and limits of strength – when to steel yourself, and when to surrender.
