In this sly, sexy, dark, and surprisingly funny new film from French director Justine Triet, luminous Virginie Efira plays psychotherapist-turned-novelist Sibyl. Struggling for inspiration, she begins to borrow source material from her newest patient (Adèle Exarchopoulos), an actress about to film a movie on the Sicilian island of Stromboli. As fiction, memory and reality blur, the film becomes a "persona" swap film, as the two women's lives merge. There are wonderful supporting performances from actors Gaspard Ulliel, Paul Hamy, and Niels Schneider. Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann) give a tour-de-force comic turn as the director of the film-within-the-film. This playful film invokes European classics Contempt, Persona, and of course Stromboli.
