Meet the Filmmaker - Andrea Leland
ANDREA E. LELAND, Producer / director: Leland (MFA Art Institute Chicago) has produced and directed award-winning documentaries focusing on Caribbean cultures. She works collaboratively with tradition bearers providing a forum to voice their untold stories, personal challenges, and compelling triumphs. Residing on St John, USVI for over 25+ years she has seen first-hand the urgency of creating films about the ocean crisis. Her films have won numerous awards and have screened at museums, conferences, educational institutions, and festivals throughout Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Leland is a member of New Day Films, a social issue self-distribution cooperative. She is co-producer of Every Second Breath Project, a short-film series that presents people who have been deeply affected by the ocean, and who are actively engaged in trying to help the ocean heal.
Artist Statement:
Residing in the US Virgin Islands for over 25+ years and more recently in California, I have seen first hand the urgency of creating videos about the ocean crisis. For years plastic has been invading our beaches killing birds, turtles and other sea creatures. Recently St John, USVI was directly in the path hit of the strongest hurricane ever recorded resulting in devastation both on land and sea including: rise of invasive species (lion fish); destroyed coral reefs; loss of community from those who have had to relocate due to loss of home and income. I feel an obligation to bring attention to this crisis.

Meet the Cast - Barbara Crites
Ten years ago, Barbara went to St. John because of a job opportunity and stayed because of the "wildlife"---the underwater wildlife that is. Although she wasn't much of a "water person", she decided to "jump in with both feet". she purchased some good equipment and started snorkeling. She became fascinated with marine wildlife and bought some fish identification books and started studying. If she saw something she didn't know, she'd look it up when she got home. She perused the books and learned to identify more and more creatures, corals and fish. She has found and photographed creatures and organisms that are as yet unidentified.
You can view Barbara's photography log at Barbara's website.
Note: All Q&As will be recorded and available to watch through the end of this program (March 5, 2021).
