BetterBetter is set in the near future. A private medical facility called Refine offers a “personality enhancing” service. The procedure is administered through a painless injection and can reduce or eradicate what people may perceive as a negative character trait, such as nervousness, anger or impatience. Jamie is a young mother who shares a strong bond with her 10 year old son, Max. Max is an effeminate child exploring his gender identity - for which he is extensively bullied at school. As the bullying becomes increasingly severe, Jamie fears for her son’s immediate and long term future. Through her neighbour, Jamie is introduced to Refine, a new private medical facility. Should she allow Max to undergo this procedure in order to protect him, or should she continue to encourage him to follow his natural inclinations and accept a more trying and complex future?
