Van returns to his family in Vietnam, taking with him his Vietnamese-American boyfriend Ian. But with his mother expecting him to marry and raise a family, will he ever find the right time to come out?

Van, the heir of a wealthy Vietnamese family, returns home from the US to attend the moving of his father's tomb, but his family is surprised when he arrives accompanied by his partner, a young Vietnamese-American named Ian.

Suspecting nothing, his widowed mother still expects her son to marry and have children, in accordance with his duties as heir. What’s more, his grandmother, suffering from dementia, mistakes Ian for her grandson.

Will Van ever find the right time to come out? Or will he give in to tradition and the expectations of his family?

Goodbye Mother was winner of the Audience Awards at the Philadelphia and Toronto Reel Asian Film Festivals in 2020.
