Filmmaker and professor Dr. Tasha Hubbard speaks with Thimali Kodikara about the intersections of Canadian and American Civil Rights Movements; the global call for the end of institutionalized racial discrimination and environmental rights.


Dr. Tasha Hubbard is a filmmaker and an associate professor in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta. She is from Peepeekisis First Nation and is themother of a thirteen-year-old son. Her latest film, nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up, opened Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival and won the top Canadian film prize and the Canadian Screen Award for Best Feature Documentary. She researches Indigenous efforts to return buffalo to the land and Indigenous film in North America.


Thimali Kodikara is a multi-disciplinary producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Thimali is currently series producer and co-host of Doc Society's groundbreaking podcast, Mothers Of Invention on feminist solutions to the climate crisis. Currently in Season 3, Thimali co-hosts alongside the first woman president of Ireland, Mary Robinson and comedian and writer, Maeve Higgins. A venture led by equal parts strong editorial and social justice impact, Thimali's work on Mothers Of Invention provides a platform for black, brown and indigenous women and girls all over the world living and persisting from the frontlines of the climate crisis.
