Riding on the back of her mother, a baby sugar glider gets her first glimpse of a gumtree forest in Australia’s outback. It’s burning hot and bone dry, yet the sun and heat mean the trees produce so much sugar, their sweet nectar and sap make easy meals for anyone with a sweet tooth. Flocks of hundreds of colourful and noisy rainbow lorikeets descend on the neighbourhood and join the feast. But life on the desert continent is never easy. Huge lace monitors stalk the forest floor and with powerful claws, climb high into the trees, to reach the holes of lorikeets and sugar gliders. And as summer brings even hotter and drier weather, little creatures of the Outback need special skills to survive. But the resilience of even the toughest is tested to the limit when lightning ignites a raging wildfire. Now too big to be carried by her mother, the baby sugar glider faces the seemingly impossible task of escaping the flames.
