Many conservationists believe that the biggest problem for wildlife is people--but Sheila Funnell is convinced that they’re also the solution. She protects endangered Grevy’s zebras by working with Samburu communities across northern Kenya to empower women. From widows who collect critical data on the zebras’ ecology, to young mothers who sew reusable sanitary pads to help keep girls in school, to grandmothers who replant grasslands critical to both the zebras and the communities’ cattle and goats, Sheila and the women she works with are creating a landscape of coexistence that benefits all who live here—both human and wild.
