In his final screen role, Bruno Ganz blends reenactments and archival materials to relate a Jewish-German couple’s poignant pre-WWII romance. Artfully weaving past and present, Winter Journey centers around the search for truth regarding a married couple's experiences during Hitler’s rise to power. In the film, George Goldsmith (played by Ganz) recalls the events leading to his and his wife’s escape from Nazi Germany. Both gifted musicians, they could perform only as members of the Jewish Cultural Federation, a remarkable arts organization used by the Nazis as a propaganda tool. Using his eyes and voice to notable effect, Ganz movingly portrays Goldsmith’s voyage of memory, based on the highly personal book by Martin Goldsmith, the couple's son and NPR radio host.
