Zoe, a young British teen roaming the streets of Amsterdam and avoiding her mother’s funeral, randomly meets and enlists the help of, Ruth, an Israeli woman avoiding her own wedding, to secure some hallucinogenic mushrooms. What ensues is one of the unlikeliest of buddy comedies as the two share a playful, psychedelic and unforgettable trip. Having formed an improbable connection, they wander the city together, escaping their troubles and sharing profound epiphanies all in the course of one wildly eventful and often otherworldly day. Featuring wonderfully endearing and hilarious performances by lead actors, Nell Barlow and Naama Amit, Day Trippers is a charming and whimsical slice-of-life dramedy that might be just what the “Green Doctor” ordered. Director Veronica Kedar’s film is both grounded and nuanced and serves as an imaginative reminder that, with or without the help of hallucinogens, profound connections often happen when we least expect them.
