Fans of the gentle family dramas of Yasujiro Ozu and Hirokazu Kore-eda will feel right at home watching Yoon Dan-bi’s extraordinary feature debut, which won four awards at the 2019 Busan International Film Festival, as well as the Bright Future Award at the 2020 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The story centers on an adolescent girl named Okju, who moves with her younger brother Dongju and their broke, recently divorced father into the home of her grandfather. Soon, her aunt joins them as well when her relationship hits the skids. Through a series of acutely- observed, subtly- constructed scenes, Yoon creates a portrait of the meaning of family in today’s Korea.
