“Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.” Bette Davis’s famous line from All About Eve could just as easily apply to Lee Jae-kyoo’s film, one of many international remakes of the 2016 Italian movie Perfect Strangers. The premise alone is delicious: seven longtime friends get together for a dinner party. On a whim they decide that they all must place their cellphones face up on the table and show the others every call and text that comes through. What follows is a smartphone-era comedy of manners in which everyone’s dirty secrets are dragged out into the light. Featuring a fantastic ensemble cast, Intimate Strangers is quick-witted, full of surprises, and may make you want to stay in lockdown for a little while longer, such are the perils of socializing that it depicts.
