A Toronto-based actor, writer and director who earned a place in the history of Canadian film with her early collaborations with Bruce McDonald on ROADKILL and HIGHWAY 61, Valerie Buhagiar drew from her own family lore to create this delightful tale of a woman getting a belated chance to live life to the fullest. Natascha McElhone’s lead performance is just as entrancing as the scenery in Buhagiar’s comedy-drama about a woman in Malta who experiences a surprising liberation after years toiling as a caretaker in the church where her brother was the priest. Of course, Carmen’s eager embrace of new freedom causes plenty of disruptions for her neighbours, too. Warm, witty and energetic, Buhagiar’s latest feature is a charming reminder that it’s never too late to start your life anew.
