This past Christmas, Canadian film lost one of its boldest and most cherished talents when Jean-Marc Vallée passed away suddenly in his chalet in Québec. To honour the filmmaker whose work we’ve been thrilled to present at the festival several times, this year’s edition of KCFF includes a special retrospective screening of the director’s second feature and his first to demonstrate all he could do, one whose match of originality, stylistic audacity and emotional poignancy he’d repeat in future Hollywood hits like DALLAS BUYERS CLUB and WILD. Thanks to Vallée’s astonishing control of his medium and the explosive performances by Marc-André Grondin and Michel Côté as a young man and his father struggling to come to terms with each other in ‘70s Montreal, C.R.A.Z.Y. remains a coming-of-age story like no other. Kingston audiences voted it the KCFF’s People’s Choice in 2006.
Please note: this is a retrospective screening and not open for voting.
