From Screen to Merch – The Business of Licensing Animation

Most kids’ character merch comes from animated properties; think Peppa Pig, Minions, Paw Patrol and CoComelon but not all animation will, or can, translate into merchandise. In this session we’ll look at what Creators of animated content need to think about if they aspire for their characters to extend into licensed consumer products - from play patterns in the content itself, to types of merch and when it’s ‘safe’ to launch. We’ll also look at how the traditional sources of successful franchise brands are changing, from comics and books to gaming and even celebrity creations.

The pressure is on – time is money, deadlines, long hours, stress and by the way, the planet is burning. Then a pandemic comes along and everything comes to a standstill. We're all forced, by nature, to stop and think. Suddenly, we have time to make changes both big and small – and it all makes sense – less travel, better work life balance, and oat milk is really nice in coffee! Reducing carbon, can also mean reducing stress. Balancing nature, is good for balancing your life. In this session, Steve Dorrance – Series Producer at Gutsy Animations– will share his tips and tricks for making the sustainable attainable in the animation industry, drawing upon his experience of securing the coveted Albert certification for the third season of Gutsy Animations' award-winning animated TV series, "Moominvalley".
