In this event we welcome industry experts from the world of animation to cover a wide range of subjects we can all relate to, be it contract law, sustainability practises or the business of licensing animation, these short engaging talks are must see for anyone in industry.

From Screen to Merch – The Business of Licensing Animation

Jo Redfern - Global Brand Director, Sutikki

Most kids’ character merch comes from animated properties; think Peppa Pig, Minions, Paw Patrol and CoComelon but not all animation will, or can, translate into merchandise. In this session we’ll look at what Creators of animated content need to think about if they aspire for their characters to extend into licensed consumer products - from play patterns in the content itself, to types of merch and when it’s ‘safe’ to launch. We’ll also look at how the traditional sources of successful franchise brands are changing, from comics and books to gaming and even celebrity creations.

Contract Law 101

Simon Portman - Commercial Contract IP Solicitor, Marks & Clerk Law LLP

In this valuable session, Simon will cover the key legal and commercial considerations businesses will encounter when contracting with partners in the sector. This will include the key contract types you will encounter, legal pitfalls to avoid, preparing yourself for investment and negotiating strategies to employ.

Too busy? Listen to nature

Steve Dorrance – Series Producer, Gutsy Animations

The pressure is on – time is money, deadlines, long hours, stress and by the way, the planet is burning. Then a pandemic comes along and everything comes to a standstill. We're all forced, by nature, to stop and think. Suddenly, we have time to make changes both big and small – and it all makes sense – less travel, better work life balance, and oat milk is really nice in coffee! Reducing carbon, can also mean reducing stress. Balancing nature, is good for balancing your life. In this session, Steve Dorrance – Series Producer at Gutsy Animations– will share his tips and tricks for making the sustainable attainable in the animation industry, drawing upon his experience of securing the coveted Albert certification for the third season of Gutsy Animations' award-winning animated TV series, "Moominvalley".
