Synopsis | Two hungry young men decide to rob a bakery run by a Communist and Wagner-enthusiast. Before they can pull off their attack, they encounter a young woman in the bakery, struggling to choose between a Japanese pastry and French croissants. Background | Director Yamakawa first came across Haruki Murakami's short story Bakery Attack in the literary magazine of Waseda University, which they both attended several years apart.&nbsp;Yamakawa sought permission from Murakami to adapt it and, though privately reluctant, Murakami granted it. The author was ultimately so pleased he let Yamakawa adapt a second short story, On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning, the following year.

Attack on a Bakery

Synopsis | A Girl, She's 100% is the imaginings of a young man as he replays, remembers and reimages the twinkling eye contact he made with a young woman as they passed on a Harajuku sidewalk.&nbsp;A seamless mix of live-action and stills, colour, monochrome and selective tinting.&nbsp; Background | This is the second Haruki Murakami short story Director Yamakawa adapted. Murakami granted permission after being pleased with how Attack On a Bakery (1982) turned out.

A Girl, She Is 100%

Synopsis | The titular anti-hero takes a job at the Slaughterhouse Saloon, “an arena of dreams where characters, images and situations from popular culture are transmitted into something entirely new.” (Tony Rayns) There, Billy encounters dish-washer Marx Engels, femme-fatale Sharlotte Rampling (sic) and a range of cultural figures in new guises, including Harry Callahan, Bruce Springsteen and Jesus. Background | The film has not been available anywhere with English subtitles, and hasn’t screened in the west at all, since its original, lauded festival run. This event marks its 35th anniversary with an all-new English translation. A note on materials | The New Morning of Billy the Kid is screening from the best currently-available materials, which are derived from the Japanese commercial DVD. We hope that this screening (the first in the West for 30+ years) and our newly translated English subtitles (long since unavailable), will encourage further screenings, the re-discovery of the 35mm print once in festival circulation and/or, even better, a full restoration and release.
