The panel examines Alassane’s pioneering work which has contributed to laying the foundation for today’s thriving animation on the continent. The discussion also brings into focus the creative process and techniques of Moustapha Alassane, current efforts at restoring and preserving his work, and the overall current state of animation in Africa.


  • Amélie Garin-Davet is Film Program Officer at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, New York City. Garin-Davet is an expert in African cinema. She organized in 2017 the US a retrospective of Moustapha Alassane’s films and also helped coordinate the restoration of Samba Le Grand in 2019. 
  • Razak Alassane is a visual artist and son of the late Moustapha Alassane. 
  • Dr. Boukary Sawadogo, Assistant Professor of cinema studies at the City College of New York and the founder of Harlem African Animation Festival.
