“Escape” is a poetic and intimate journey on the path of exile, through the story of five Syrian women artists scattered in different countries. In the confidence of their room, the characters recall their memories in front of the camera. From Berlin to Oslo, from Paris to Istanbul, their words echo and complement one another. Between two cigarettes, they recount their personal trajectory, from their escape out of Syria, to the feeling of strangeness in the host country, the traumas of war, and ultimately, the transformation of oneself through art. Performances of dance, music and videos, as well as archival footage from Syria, enrich these informal exchanges. While painting the portrait of a generation of creative and independent women, the film generates a reflection around the sense of belonging and the role that art can play in rebuilding and reinventing oneself away from home.
