Keep Rolling is an apt title for Man Lim Chung’s documentary portrait of Ann Hui who, in her seventies, still makes films at the same pace she did when she started her career over forty years ago. Interspersing scenes from Hui’s more autobiographical films, Man follows Hui as she goes from strutting red carpets to slogging through the mud to shoot on location in the New Territories to caring for her elderly mother. These extremes are also reflected in Hui’s films as an intellectual working in the popular entertainment industry and as a woman working in a male-dominated field: someone capable of making both art films that have been foundational to the Hong Kong New Wave as well as large-scale blockbusters of equal quality.
