Henrietta Szold was one of the most influential Jewish American women of the 20th century, yet her extraordinary story has never been told on film—until now. A pioneering humanitarian, Szold transformed personal heartbreak into a lifelong mission of service. She founded Hadassah in 1912, mobilizing generations of American Jewish women to support health care and education in Palestine, and later became the driving force behind Youth Aliyah, which rescued thousands of Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Europe.
From creating night schools for immigrants in Baltimore to establishing a modern health system in Palestine that treated Jews and Arabs equally, Szold’s vision was decades ahead of its time. She never married or had children of her own, but became a mother figure to thousands, offering hope and dignity in the face of displacement and persecution.
Directed by Emmy Award-winner Abby Ginzberg—whose own family history is entwined with Szold’s—Labors of Love is both an intimate portrait of an unsung heroine and a stirring meditation on compassion and the power of one woman’s vision to change the course of history.
