Ethan Gallegos (Muscogee) Program Officer, Nourishing Native Foods and Health
Ethan Gallegos joined First Nations in 2021 as a Program Coordinator for the Nourishing Native Foods & Health program. In this role, he assisted in the administration and implementation of First Nations’ Native agriculture and food systems projects. In 2022, he was promoted to Program Officer. Ethan came to First Nations from Washington State University Vancouver, where he worked with the Food System Justice Action Research project. As a program coordinator and then project manager, Ethan was responsible for conducting community outreach, hosting wisdom councils and webinars, and applying for and managing grant funding. While at Washington State University Vancouver, he also established a BIPOC student-led food system council and launched the Water to Wyam project to bring clean water infrastructure to the Wyam tribal fishing villages.
Valerie Segrest, an enrolled member of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and co-founder of Tahoma Peak Solutions.
For more than a decade, Valerie has dedicated her work in the field of Nutrition and Human Health Science towards the efforts of the food sovereignty movement and catalyzing food security strategies rooted in education, awareness, and overcoming barriers to accessing traditional foods for Tribal communities throughout North America. By utilizing a community-based participatory research approach, she has worked to organize tribal community members in grassroots efforts toward strengthening sustainable food systems that are culturally relevant and nutritionally appropriate.
She most recently served as NAAF’s Regional Director for Native Food and Knowledge Systems.
