These three films were made in the wake of the 2014 coup in Thailand and reflect on its effects in surprisingly whimsical ways. Drink Sky on Rabbit’s Field (lost control) is a Rube Goldbergian contraption of a film that makes music out of the sounds and images of everyday life and considers how close the rational is to the irrational. After the 2014 coup, the military played a propaganda song every hour on television and radio for over a year; in Ghost Rabbit & the Casket Sales, Nongyao reacts to this incessant anthem by remixing and degrading it—using a cobbled together jumble of machines—and surreptitiously films other people’s reactions to the song. In The Light of Happisadness, Nongyao attaches a camera to his bicycle on New Year’s Day 2016 and finds himself unable to tell which lights are for celebrations and which are for funerals, causing him to reflect on Thailand’s political situation.
