The Beginning was a week-long inaugural Mother Tongue Film Festival which presented nineteen Native languages from eight different regions. It began on International Mother Language Day, February 21, 2016. Here are two films from 2016 that capture the spirit of that first year, Shimásání and Breath of Life: Revitalization of North America's Native Languages.
El inicio: el primer Festival de Cine de la Lengua Materna duró una semana y presentó obras en 19 lenguas indígenas de ocho regiones diferentes. El 21 de febrero de 2016, Día Internacional de la Lengua Materna, la Iniciativa Recuperando Voces de la Institución Smithsonian organizó el primer Festival de Cine en Lengua Materna. A continuación, se presentan dos películas de 2016 que sintetizan la programación de ese año: Shimásání y Breath of Life: Revitalization of North America's Native Languages.
This documentary film follows the journey of Native Americans as they rediscover their ancestral languages, starting with work in Washington, D.C., with institutions and scholars, and continuing with visits to the Yurok and the yak tityu tityu Northern Chumash tribes in California, and with the Otoe-Missouria and Pawnee tribes in Oklahoma. This film was created with the cooperation of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Breath of Life Archival Institute for Indigenous Languages.
Este documental sigue la travesía de un grupo de nativos americanos que redescubren sus lenguajes ancestrales. Empezando con su trabajo en Washington D.C. con instituciones e investigadores, continuando con sus visitas a las tribus Yurok y al Tak Tityu Tityu Chumash del Norte en California, y con las tribus Otoe-Missouria y Pawnee en Oklahoma. Esta película fue creada en colaboración con el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de la Institución Smithsonian y el Instituto de Archivos para Lenguajes Indígenas Breath of Life.
