The 2021 Mother Tongue Film Festival saw change, expansion, and opportunity. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the sixth festival shifted to a wholly online experience which lasted three months and centered around storytelling's ability to heal. As a Māori girl transitions into womanhood, she leaves behind the mischief of childhood for the responsibilities associated with protecting her people. Hinekura follows her ceremonial journey in accepting her role as a warrior and a woman, marked by the internal and external struggles that exist in growing up.
