The 2021 Mother Tongue Film Festival saw change, expansion, and opportunity. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the sixth festival shifted to a wholly online experience which lasted three months and centered around storytelling's ability to heal. The robust online programming would inspire future digital offerings that allow the Mother Tongue Film Festival to be accessible to viewers around the globe, such as Hinekura and Forbidden Strings

As a Māori girl transitions into womanhood, she leaves behind the mischief of childhood for the responsibilities associated with protecting her people. Hinekura follows her ceremonial journey in accepting her role as a warrior and a woman, marked by the internal and external struggles that exist in growing up.
