Mr. Emancipation is a colorful documentary about a man, his progressive ideas for a festival that flourished in spite of or even because of racism, in one of the most significant places and times in North American History. The festival was big enough to attract Eleanor Roosevelt, President Harry Truman, Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, Jack Johnson, and Martin Luther King. At the heart of it all was Walter L. Perry, who, in his spare time for 30 plus years, transformed his home town of Windsor, Ontario into the most exciting place to be. It was the celebration of life and escape from reality. There was blatant discrimination and segregated communities on both sides of the border. But somehow, in the midst of racial tension and fear, all differences were put aside once a year, and black culture was celebrated by everyone.
