During a hand game tournament in Northern California, Danny de Leon interviews tribal members about the importance of the hand games.&nbsp;This culturally relevant tradition has been bringing Native communities together for thousands of years.

Hinowu: Hand Games

“Awaken” looks at the issues and challenges young people face growing up on the Quechan Nation's Fort Yuma Reservation in Southern California. The film tells the story of cousins Orlando and Kieran, whose love for metal music has not deterred them from learning their traditional songs and dances. Like most teenagers, these kids also have other interests. Ultimately, the film asks how do they see the Quechan culture fitting into their lives and as part of their future? Filmed on the Fort Yuma Reservation in Winterhaven, California, “Awaken” was made by first-time documentary filmmakers Nathaniel Golding and Xavier Madrid. The purpose of this project is to let young tribal members tell their story about contemporary life and issues on the reservation. With the guidance of seasoned documentary filmmaker Daniel Golding, Nathaniel and Xavier worked over the course of a year developing shooting and editing this short documentary. Faced with many obstacles, they were able to succeed in finishing the film. This project was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities (<a href="about:blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">calhum.org</a>).&nbsp;

Awaken

Nominated for 2021 shawash-iliʔi Award for Best Native American Film "Becoming: ORLANDO DUGI" explores the connection of Orlando's contemporary designs with his traditional Navajo upbringing, the honoring of Native women, especially his grandmothers. It challenges the notion that Native art must be fixed in time, and shows how weaving the past into the present can be a powerful form of cultural expression. Filmed over 3 months, the documentary captures Orlando's process of creating his 2020 Capsule Collection in intricate and vibrant detail, and includes deeply personal reflections on his experience as an Indigenous artist. It culminates with the reveal of his finished designs at Santa Fe Indian Market's Virtual Fashion Show.

Becoming: Orlando Dugi

Nominated for 2021 shawash-iliʔi Award for Best Native American Film Members of the Quinault Indian Nation relied on the blueback salmon for as long as they can remember – until they couldn’t. The Quinault Division of Natural Resources has been fighting for decades to recover the iconic fish from habitat degradation, but now finds itself at ground zero for the environmental impacts of climate change.&nbsp;

In this music video, students from RISE (Resources for Indian Student Education) portray some scenarios to represent the Red Dress Project to Tamara Podemski's song "Stand Strong." The music video is followed by Congresswoman Deb Haaland's message about the MMIW crisis and her bill the "Not Invisible Act" recently signed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women

Nominated for 2021 shawash-iliʔi Award for Best Native American Film In February 2020, Sharon Day (Ojibwe) led a group of Water Walkers through the Arizona desert to walk for the Salt River. Through animation and live-shot footage, this documentary travels with the Salt River Water Walkers, describing this Indigenous-led ceremony as it creates community and builds relationships with the earth through the shared goal to care for the water.

A Navajo shepherdess perseveres despite extreme drought in this poetic short film about a rapidly vanishing way of life. “We didn’t even go up the mountain because there’s no water,” she recounts. “Hardships are just lessons and challenges in life and you just can’t dwell on it, you have to live through it.”

Among the Cherokee people in North Carolina, the cultural tradition of stickball exemplifies “more than a game”. Cherokee women played the game at the turn of the 21st century for several years and reflect on their time playing and what the game means to the past, present, and future of Cherokee people.

Rosie, a young Anishinaabe girl, learns the origins of jingle dancing from her Nookomis the night before dancing in her first pow wow.

A short history of what led the Spokane Tribe to establish tribal water quality standards on the Spokane River through the EPA and the Clean Water Act by applying for and receiving the "Treatment as a State" designation in order to save the water, the fish, their culture and way of life.

Nominated for 2021 shawash-iliʔi Award for Best Native American Film This documentary film tells the story of two women coming together to fight a pipeline expansion project in South Snohomish County in Washington state, uncovering major climate and environmental impacts along the way.
