John Peterson (Viggo Mortensen) lives with his partner Eric and their adopted daughter in Southern California, far from the traditional rural life he left behind years ago. John's ageing father, Willis, still lives on the isolated farm in which John grew up, but the headstrong patriarch, experiencing the early stages of dementia, struggles to run the farm on his own. In the hope of finding his father a place to relocate to, John invites him to stay with him in LA. Despite John's best intentions, this visit leads their two very different worlds to a painful collision.
