WORLD PREMIERE!

Nevermore Jury Award Nominee - Best Actress - Jeongin Hwang ("Minyoung")

Nevermore Jury Award Nominee - Best Director - Naeri Do

Here is a mind-blending Korean non-linear science-fiction extravaganza that Nevermore jurors likened to Strange Days, Altered States, Fight Club and a little bit of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure! Minyoung is a shy high school girl suffering from depression and bulimia. She is mercilessly bullied by her classmates, especially the sadistic Taeyong and his posse. One day, she is rescued by a sympathetic classmate who introduces her to transhumanism, a process where electrical shocks to the brain cause a person to "wake up to reality" through electrical baptism. Now, fully empowered, she plans revenge for the boys that have brutally bullied her. But when Taeyong turns up murdered, Minyoung must travel back in time using the Tesla coil to reveal the killer...even if the killer might be herself.

In Korean with English subtitles.

Director Statement: NAERI DO

Graduated with a degree in Philosophy, Humanities, from Sogang University, 2005. Like Itae's words from the film, we are not seeing the reality of the world (input,) but rather the reality interpreted by our brains such as information, images, signals (output.) The film, “Trans” outlines such structure of the brain as its plot and follows the flow of subconsciousness rather than the emotions of the characters and the drama, drawing a map of multiple subconscious like painting an abstract work of art. The story displays humans in brains (trans,) unfolds with the evolution of brains in humans (transhuman,) the state of trans (dreams/ coma / subconsciousness) reveals itself in reality (déjà vu,) and the world that our brain sees (trans) merges and repeats to create our realities. The plot reflecting the structure of brains and object (the tesla coil) were used to tell a narrative of liberation of humankinds in a dynamic manner.
