Now in its 33rd year, the United States Super 8mm Film &amp; Digital Video Festival is the largest and longest running juried festival of its kind in North America. The festival encourages any genre (including animation, documentary, personal, narrative, and experimental) made on Super 8mm/8mm film, Hi 8mm/8mm, or digital video. We invite you to discover cutting-edge works created by passionate filmmakers with these small-gauge media formats. The 33rd annual United States Super 8mm Film &amp; Digital Video Festival will be held virtually February 20+21, 2021. The Festival will include a different program each evening.

This video was inspired by Karen McCadden’s poem "Portrait of the Family as a Definition" as read by McCadden for the video. The video translates the brief and lyrical exchanges between loss, family, addiction, trauma, and that which otherwise haunts.

Snowfall is a correspondence of poetic letters in Urdu between mother and son. Written seasons apart, their words dance around their shared emotions on migration and steadfastness, nostalgia and loss, belonging and distance, and horizons of potential futures so close, one might step into them.

Ominous cinegrams of Albrecht Dürer’s Melencolia print intercut, like cascading scythes, with depictions of a woman in a field, evoking repetitions that exist in harvest rituals, as well as in gestures of madness. Specters of familial anxieties creep into this loose take on the myth of Południca (noonwraith or Lady Midday), a Slavic harvest spirit that could cause madness in those who wandered the fields alone.

A fever dream. An infinitely morphing kaleidscopic stained glass window; bells that remind me of the sounds of Amsterdam, my second home after New York. Frantic REM sleep kicks in around 5 minutes...A pandemic film made under quarantine, Spring 2020. Hand-painted film. Direct animation. 2020; 8 min.

Mass for Shut-ins

– (Worcester, Massachusetts)This video invites the viewer to consider what truly constitutes a visit to the zoo, especially if someone is visually impaired. Is it just to see the animals or is it a multi-faceted experience where we rely on other senses? To explores these ideas, the camera simulates the perspective of someone with low vision, based on the real-life experiences of the artist who is visually impaired.&nbsp;2020; 12 min.

Three narrators converge in the deserts of New Mexico, each with a separate story to tell. One narrator is J. Robert Oppenheimer, another is a visitor from outer space, and the other is me.

New Mexico Death Wish Diatribe

– Ghent, Belgium)In this film Bogaert explores one particular place in the world through postcards. Bogaert collected 200 postcards, all sent from the same terrace on the top of Monte Brè overlooking the bay of Lugano, from the early nineteen hundreds until today. He uses front and backside of the postcards, both the image and the text, to start a nostalgic evocation. Then he traveled to this place to film the terrace, the Lugano Bay and the surrounding mountains from the air with his old Super 8 camera.&nbsp;The postcards come to life and take the viewer along to this beautiful site that until today overwhelms by its astonishing nature. It makes us aware of the importance to preserve such inspiring and contemplative places. 2020; 19 min.&nbsp;
