A suicidal woman jumps from a balcony and lands next to a serial killer just finishing his latest nefarious act. She whispers something into his ear as she takes her final breaths and he kisses her. The scene, snapped by bystanders while he’s kneeling next to her, is interpreted as the ultimate act of kindness propelling the killer to accidental stardom, that is until a journalist starts to uncover the truth. This wild setup sets the stage for Carlos Conceição's sophomore feature film, one that puts him firmly on the map of directors to keep a close eye on. Borrowing from the Italian classics but also mixing shamelessly with exploitation cinema from the late 70s, this completely silent gem is a visual and narrative tour-de-force and one of the highlights of this year's selections. —Hugues Barbier
