Sam’s brother Carl longs to be out on the road, chasing storms like Bill Paxton in Twister, but he’s stuck on cart duty at the supermarket. And while he’s memorized pretty much the whole recorded weather history of their corner of the state, he’s not allowed to drive a car. But when Sam and Carl’s boss gives them the boot the same day that their mom and her boyfriend get bagged for dealing weed, their last ties to their nowhere town seem to have been providentially snipped. Filling out the expedition with their friend Lewis and estranged older sister Lillian, they shove off in the family ice-cream truck, searching for the storm of the century and smoothing out the tangled bonds of family against a sunburnt Southern landscape. -Jonathan Kieran
