In July, 2015, a young woman named Kate Steinle is shot accidentally on Pier 14 in San Francisco. An undocumented immigrant, Jose Inés García Zaraté, is charged with her murder. The incident gains national attention when Donald Trump exploits it on the campaign trail for his fiery anti-immigration platform, which helps propel him to the Republican nomination and ultimately to the White House. The national media pour fuel on the fire, twisting the story into a referendum on San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy. When the trial begins in the fall of 2017, the stakes are high for the defense team, led by two San Francisco public defenders: Chief Attorney Matt Gonzalez and Francisco Ugarte, head of the office’s Immigration Defense Unit. With the eyes of the nation upon them, the defenders must prevail against fierce political and media headwinds in their fight for justice.
