Having already suffered the humiliation of losing her job, aspiring writer Ren must now endure a week of summer vacation with her overbearing parents and younger sister. A 20-something trans woman eager to prove her self-sufficiency, Ren is instead forced to while away her time with resort activities intended for children or seniors. In the summer haze, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between rebellion and regression. Something You Said Last Night is a refreshing film about trans livelihood without catering to preconceptions and stale notions about trans life. Transness is only the start of what Luis De Filippis brings to this distinct, at times deliciously low-key, tale of family and arrested development.
