Based on the biography of Luiz Gama, one of the most important characters in Brazilian history, a Black man who used laws and courts to free more than five hundred enslaved people. Born free, Gama was sold into slavery at the age of ten to pay his father's gambling debts. Despite enslavement, he became literate, studied and sued for his own freedom, becoming one of the most respected lawyers of his time and an abolitionist who inspired an entire country.
