Director Statement

Which parts of your own narrative do you wish you knew more about?

As kids we grow up asking questions. About the world, about life, about how things work. But there are certain questions that get left unanswered, or never asked in the first place. Growing up with a grandfather and father in the fire service, I asked a lot of questions. How many calls did you go to today? Did you get to save someone? How big was the fire? Is everyone ok? Why not?

The answers I got were padded and censored for my benefit as a child. As an adult, I decided to return to my family and ask the questions that they wouldn't have answered when I was younger. Inspired by the similar approach taken by Sarah Polley in her film Stories We Tell, I was driven to immerse myself further in a story that I had been adjacent to my entire life.
