Director Statement

I was raised in the suburbs of Toronto in a traditional Greek household where family was everything. Our house was the meeting place where dozens of my relatives gathered to argue, gossip, and laugh together in celebration of birthdays, name days, holidays, and anything worth raising a glass for. It was a circus.

Embedded in that circus was a macho pride that glorified drinking. “You’re not a man if you can’t handle your liquor.” It’s a notion that holds true today and it challenged our family-centered way of life. I often asked myself, “How can I love the incoherent lout rambling at the end of the table?” ... “Because they’re family.”

These early life reflections helped to inspire my latest short film, Lloyd Loses Everything. It’s a dark comedy set in Mississauga about an alcoholic mortgage broker, who is compelled by pride to convince his wife and loved ones that he was wrongfully fired from his job…as he loses everything.

All of the technical and aesthetic choices are meant to get you on Lloyd’s side and ingratiate you, the viewer, into his home. From the handheld shooting style to the light-hearted jazz track in the party sequence – it’s also why we hyperbolized Lloyd’s inner sadness and hurt in a French New Wave style. I want you to love Lloyd, like I loved members of my family, even when they behave badly.

In the heat of those ouzo-fueled arguments, where insults were thrown around our dinner table as readily as blessings at a Greek Orthodox church function, my family stuck by each other, somehow, for better or worse. Lloyd loses just about everything early on in this film. But by the end – in spite of his self-destructive behaviour – does Lloyd lose you too?
