Hailing from the pepper family, the kava plant (piper methysticum) was domesticated in the northern islands of Vanuatu approximately 3000 years ago.

Today, kava is the most important and highest value agricultural crop in the South Pacific Island nation. The phenomenal growth has created a multi-million-dollar industry based on culture as commodity. But what is this mysterious drink? How is it translated into the modern day? How do women participate in this cultural exchange that has always forbid them to do so? What about the issues of cultural appropriation? The film explores this little known plant and its modern journey.
