Pira Poesia (Burning Ballad)
“Burning Ballad” is a poetic experimental documentary created from images collected in 2013 by the Brazilian collective Pira Poesia, with director Dai Belquer as a member. The collective explored poetry through audiovisual experiments inspired by the legacy of Torquato Neto, a Brazilian poet, composer, journalist and one of the creators of the famous Tropicalia movement - the artistic and counterculture wave that emerged in the late 1960's during some of the harshest years of the military dictatorship. The artists captured images using professional and amateur gear - such as iPads, handycams and cellphones -; and shot in several locations in Brazil and abroad, in South Africa, Mozambique and the United States. The group spent around a year investigating Torquato Neto’s work. Meetings, readings, brainstorming sessions, discussions and creations of scenes are some of the tools used to trigger the production of several hours of cinematic material. In August of 2018, filmmaker Dai Belquer starts to work with the footage from 5 years back. She conceived what became “Burning Ballad”, a documentary about poetry, cinema, politics, about a group that provoked by Torquato Netos’s work joined forces to discuss society and politics. His ideas, poetry and world view are more alive and urgent than ever, not only in Brazil, but also in the world now. “Burning Ballad” raises urgent questions on censorship, spiritual awareness, economic injustice and segregation.
