This story follows 16-year-old Louis, who has come to America to help his struggling Guatemalan family. He spends his 2 months in ICE detention, and is released to live with an uncle and cousins in New York. Louis is lonely and undocumented and very aware that everyone is counting on him back home. Juxtaposed is Judy, a long time ICE agent who works the neighborhood. This will not be the story you are expecting. Judy is also the daughter of Cuban immigrants, just trying to do her job. She cries when she sees a dog mistreated. Judy and Luis will challenge your preconceived notions with every turn. Their choices are often surprising, and at times enraging. Questions will surface: How do we justify our actions when we know they are hurting others? What lengths should we go to for family? What is the human cost of the American Dream? Five Years North gives a deeply personal look at the lives of complex individuals trapped inside the system.
