“White people want to play golf on an Indigenous burial ground” may sound like the set-up for a joke, but this really happened. The heart of the story concerns Beans, a girl poised between sweet childhood and reckless adolescence, who is forced to grow up fast. Will she become the tough Mohawk warrior she needs to be during the protests? Director Tracey Deer uses her background as a documentary filmmaker to good effect in editing together news footage of the Oka protests that tore Quebec and Canada apart in 1990. The “ordinary” violence in this film is chilling when witnessed from the point of view of children.
