“Let people who are closest to the pain, be closest to the power.” So says Malcolm Kenyatta, State Representative from the North Philly district of Pennsylvania and the first Queer person of color in the Pennsylvania State House. Executive Producer Al Roker (and others) and filmmaker Timothy Harris chronicle Malcolm’s quest for the U.S. Senate amid the stark reality of the blatant racism and homophobia ingrained in the political process of this country. To the point, in the U.S. Senate, there have been 54 senators from Pennsylvania – all white men. Braided in that story is an authentic look at Malcom Kenyatta, his family, and his passion to, yes, change the world. Kenyatta granted the filmmaker unrestricted, behind-the-scenes access to his grassroots journey as he and his team climbed the uphill battle of the “unelectable” label, a not-so-subtle code for candidates who are Black, Queer, or all of the above. In spite of the daunting realities of American politics, Malcom Kenyatta is a truly inspirational person we will surely get to know in the years to come
