What does it take to protect a rare Old Growth forest in Ontario? After Dr. Peter Quinby’s research identified the Catchacoma Old Growth forest as the largest known Old Growth eastern hemlock forest in Canada, he teamed up with Katie Krelove of the Wilderness Committee to make a case for protection. Unfortunately their case fell on deaf ears. Joined by the Youth Leadership in Sustainability Class of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, local cottagers, historians, educators, and conservationists, the Catchacoma Forest Stewardship Committee is working tirelessly to ensure that this deserving forest is recognized by the government for its ecological, education, research, and recreation values. Conserving Catchacoma

The Catchacoma Forest Stewardship Committee is working to protect a rare Old Growth Forest in Ontario from logging.

Our national food infrastructure depends on the contributions of migrant farmworkers who work on farms, in greenhouses and processing plants throughout Canada. Before the pandemic, over 20,000 people accounted for the seasonal agricultural workforce in Ontario alone, arriving through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). But advocates for migrant workers have raised concerns related to workers’ rights and sometimes abusive treatment because of the power imbalances created by the structural inequity of this program. Styawat/Leigh Joseph is a Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh Nation ethnobotanist. She grew up away from her traditional territory of Squamish, B.C. but in coming to a deeper understanding of her identity as a Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh woman, felt called to move her family home. As she navigates walking between academic and cultural worlds, she contemplates her relationship with plants and their role as teachers. On the land where her ancestors have harvested since time beyond memory, her life purpose is awakened. Walking With Plants

Styawat/Leigh Joseph, a Sḵwxw̱ú7mesh Nation ethnobotanist, navigates what it means to have grown up far from her ancestral lands, now that she has been guided back home to traditional territory through the teachings of the landscape and plants.

Eugene Bourgeois had no concerns about nuclear energy when he built his farm next door to the world's largest nuclear facility in 1974. Over that time, he and his wife Ann ran a successful wool business and taught generations of people around the world the art of knitting.They really believed they had found paradise. However, over the next few decades, Eugene, his family, and his sheep flock were frequently exposed to hydrogen sulfide, a deadly nerve gas from the nuclear plant, which caused hundreds of his sheep to be blinded, born deformed, or killed.The industry has denied any wrong doing, but Eugene has always known the truth and dedicated the rest of his life to pushing his nuclear neighbour for greater transparency and accountability. A sheep farmer laments on his complex relationship with his neighbour, the world's largest nuclear complex.

Dr. Peter Quinby&nbsp;is the founding executive director of Ancient Forest Exploration &amp; Research (created in 1992). ​ Since 2004, he has been Chair of the Board of Directors and Chief Scientist of AFER. He has studied landscape ecology and conservation since 1980. ​As a graduate student at Yale University, he was involved in watershed-ecosystem studies at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. Katie Krelove&nbsp;is the Wilderness Committee’s first-ever Ontario Campaigner. She works to build relationships and advocate towards strong campaigns to advance the Wilderness Committee’s goals of people-powered wilderness preservation for the benefit of all in Ontario. ​ Her work allows her to share her values and passion for facilitating nature engagement and protection through grassroots social movements. Katie wants to see a longer moratorium on logging instituted in the Catchacoma Forest so that more re- search can be conducted ultimately resulting in protective status. Mitch&nbsp;Bowmile&nbsp;is a Canadian documentary filmmaker telling stories that explore our connection with nature through&nbsp;adventure, conservation, and outdoor recreation.&nbsp;
