Doulas of the Computer AgeDoulas of the Computer Age uses the excavation of an electronic device to tell the history of semiconductor manufacturing. It uses a single object to tell a complex story about global supply chains and labor. ﻿Artist Bio: I tell stories and create scenes about technology, labor, and the future. Sometimes what I make is analog and stationary, sometimes it’s digital and time based. Doulas of the Computer Age uses the excavation of an electronic device to tell the history of semiconductor manufacturing. It uses a single object to tell a complex story about global supply chains and labor.

BraidA short movement based film, shot in Cape Town, South Africa, looking at connections and relationships that transcend that of the outer appearance. Directed, conceptualised and sequenced by South African artist, Sasha Fourie. ﻿Artist Bio: Sasha Fourie is a freelance artist from Cape Town, South Africa. She is a graduate of the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Dance, Theatre and Performance Studies. Sasha has an expansive artistic career and growing artistic interests that she has the intention of developing. She is a theatre maker, choreographer, film maker, professional dancer, amateur writer, deep thinker of humanity and life. In short, Sasha has taught dance classes and movement based workshops in her home country as well as in East Asia. She has taught in the South African private and government sector. She has performed many solo works surrounding narratives of humanness and some her own personal stories. She has presented many of her own theatre works and short films which have been commissioned and won awards. She has also been invited as a discussion panelist for a few international and local platforms. Topics have surrounded her digital, artistic footprint and archives of the body as a disabled body. All her creations focus on opportunity creation, employment and storytelling for women and the disabled. She hopes to remain a deep storyteller through art creation whilst constantly honing in and growing skill sets. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/@sashatheordinaryartist" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">www.youtube.com/@sashatheordinaryartist</a> More about the film: Braid is a short movement based film, shot in Cape Town, South Africa, inspired by a relationship between non biological siblings. Direction, conceptualisation and movement sequencing by South African artist, Sasha Fourie. Differentiation of the outer presentation is often noticed by others. This has been my experience in early stages of the relationship with my sibling, hair was the most noticeable for outsiders but it was an extreme private bonding experience for us, learning from each other. This juxtaposition also has an unintended connection to outer perception of my disability, invisible disability. Questions arising, of so called degrees of disabilities. Although unrelated to the concept and narrative of this film, it is fitting for this platform of RestFest, this relates to my relationship with my disability too. My relationship with my disability allows for detachment from self at times and as my condition constantly changes. I am given the opportunity to understand myself and recognise myself more each time. Both are beautiful. This film displays braiding and intertwining of the hair. A plain representation and visual metaphor of the above mentioned. Having the sounds of wind, and sea with the surrounding environment hopefully creates the feeling of space and quietness to intensify bond. There is closeness in difference.

Spoons (After Carolyn Lazard)A moving image work based upon Spoons Theory; which uses spoons as a visualisation of the disparity in energy reserves between disabled and abled people. Though a disabled and abled person will start the day with the same number of spoons, an abled person may only need 1 spoon to undertake an activity such as going to the shops, while a disabled person might use 4 spoons. In this way, disabled people deplete their spoons (or energy reserves) far quicker and thus have to be conscious about how they spend their spoons. Spoons theory has translated into a colloquialism within crip communities – “I’m out of spoons” or “I’m going to spend my spoons on you.” ﻿Artist Bio: Jamila Prowse is an artist and writer, propelled by curiosity and a desire to understand herself through making. Informed by her lived experience of disability, mixed race ancestry and the loss of her father at a young age; her work is research driven and indebted to Black feminist and crip scholars. She is an active participant in a rich and growing contemporary disabled artistic community and has been ongoingly researching, programming and creating around cripping the art world since 2018. Self taught, Jamila is drawn to experimenting with a multitude of mediums in order to process her grief and radical hope.Viewing her practice as grief work, Jamila uses visual art making as a way to process complex family histories, loss, trauma and the isolation of being a bedbound, disabled, autistic person. Often incorporating oral histories into the conception of her works; the location of voice is vital in her explorations. She embeds creative access adjustments from the outset of each project – seeing access as a method of artistic articulation.She is currently articulating through moving image, painting, photography, textiles and performance. Previous exhibitions and talks include TULCA Visual Arts Festival, (Galway Ireland), Ormston House Gallery, (Limerick, Ireland), Somerset House, South London Gallery, Studio Voltaire (London, UK) and Hordaland Kunstsenter (Bergen, Norway). VestigesDrawing from research on early computer chip manufacturing, Vestiges tells the story of a woman who finds an archive of bizarre photographs and begins to be haunted by its images. Vestiges uses similar formal structures as Chris Marker's La Jeteé, using mostly still images to explore ideas of collective memory and the exploitation of women’s, and in particular women of color’s, labor.
