Bob Byington’s (Somebody Up There Likes Me, 7 Chinese Brothers) latest film perfectly essays small town lassitude and self-destruction.

With a distant husband and young child, life in the small midwestern town is repetitive and depressing for ennui infused substitute teacher Frances Ferguson (a brilliant turn from newcomer Kaley Wheless).

Something compels the young woman to sleep with a student and effectively destroy her life, sending the small town into scandal.

Driven by a dead pan sensibility, Byington’s film succeeds in the almost-impossible and finds a dark humour in its subject matter. Meanwhile Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman narrates the tale.
