One of our favourite and most challenging films ever at Rev was Valentyn Vasyanovych’s sensational drama, The Tribe. Shot entirely in sign-language, its lean and almost documentary style pushed it to the limit of realist cinema. This multi-award winning film ratchets things just that notch higher as Vasyanovych takes us to the Ukraine in his imagined place in 2025 after the end of the conflict with Russia.

Where he places us is an environment where unexploded bombs continue to go off, bodies are unearthed, but life continues to grind on with only shreds of memories of how people can and should connect with warmth and hope.

Sergey is a former soldier struggling to adjust to life outside the military. Suffering from PTSD he listlessly works at a local factory until he accidentally encounters Katya who not only offers him some form of human-relationship hope and warmth. What she also does is bring Sergey into contact with Black Tulip, a volunteer organisation which travels the countryside exhuming bodies in an attempt to identify them, reunite them with relatives or, at the very least, give them a proper burial.

Atlantis is a fascinating, beautifully constructed and poetic work. So quiet and considered and filled with long sequences where we have time to look at the rocks, hear the fire and feel the mud. Very lovely in its stark and brutal reality and deserving of the high accolades it has so far received.
