One of the great cinema and documentary pleasures of the year is this fabulous poetic work looking at the life and work of master filmmaker Andrey Tarkovsky. Meticulously constructed by Tarkovsky’s son, the film is made up of interviews and recordings over Tarkovsky’s life as well as wonderful excerpts of his works that speaks to a unique cinematic language.

The only speaker is Tarkovsky himself, talking on subjects ranging from his first memory to the importance of religion and spirituality; film critics (who did not understand him, he believed); the distinction between cinema from other art forms; working with actors; and the artists he admired, such as Shakespeare, Bach, and Tolstoy. He also explores matters such as making films in the Soviet Union, dealing with the authorities, the difficulty of deciding whether to stay in the West, and death.

With clips from Solaris, Stalker, Nostalghia, Sacrifice and more, this film represents a beautiful examination of the life, times and mind of this great cinematic master.
