"The Hat" is an existential comedic and dramatic narrative inspired by the French New Wave movement. A vacation for two couples begin to sour after Jeffrey jumps in the foreboding bay to save his friend’s hat. Cal begins to unravel, questioning his own autonomy as he becomes jealous of Jeffrey’s flirtatious and spontaneous attitude.
"The Hat" is largely about control. Feeling driven, wanting to have purpose, and contemplating where that motivation comes from. Cal wants to feel as free as Jeffrey does, to be impulsive, yet he is trapped in his own cage, unable to feel such self actualization. The women have the comfort of each other, a respect of sisterhood, and a longing to feel their own empowerment away from such trivial concerns. Such an insignificant event is an ironic microcosm for something timeless, existential dread.
The tone of the piece invokes films like "Force Majeure," that strike a philosophical yet awkward comedic balance. Think Ruben Ostlund, Eric Rohmer, and a touch of Larry David. Long takes, natural lighting, and some improvisation.
